- In March 2022, the guideline for prolonged symptoms following COVID-19 was published. This guideline was rapidly produced by the NHG (Dutch College of General Practitioners), FMS (Federation of Medical Specialists) and the LAN (Lung Alliance Netherlands) when it soon became clear how severe the symptoms of Long COVID could be.
- Long COVID is diagnosed if the symptoms still persist after three months. However, it is not known which symptoms patients might have suffered from prior to COVID-19. Long COVID partly concerns symptoms that occur frequently anyway, such as coughing, fatigue, muscle ache and headache. Did COVID-19 indeed cause these? That is where Lifelines comes into play.
- At the start of the pandemic, doctors produced a range of guidelines and other documents for lingering symptoms following a COVID-19 infection. That all had to happen quickly and little knowledge from research was available at the time. The recommendations did not always align well with each other.
- A loss of smell often occurs following a COVID-19 infection. The majority of patients recover from this quickly, often within a month. But in 6 to 8 percent of patients, the symptoms can persist and a disrupted sense of smell may arise.
