ZonMw manages a considerable budget that is financed by public funding. Responsibilities, rules and procedures have been established to safeguard our expertise and integrity in carrying out our statutory task.
Many improvements in healthcare are inconceivable without curiosity-driven research. That requires talented researchers and professionals who are driven by curiosity and ambition, and who work together to innovate and strengthen scientific as well as professional knowledge in healthcare.
There is a need for more knowledge about the long COVID syndrome. ZonMw is facilitating several scientific studies on post-COVID with grants.
Getting enough exercise is important for a good physical and mental health. It reduces the chances of chronic diseases and dementia. Exercise also plays an important role in child development and healthy ageing. We are investing in research and innovation to increase the amount of exercise people take in the Netherlands.
We aim to make the Netherlands a country where sport and exercise are always possible and enjoyable for all. We do this by contributing to the development of knowledge through research and innovation, enhancing the knowledge infrastructure and strengthening participation in sport and exercise.

We share thoughts and ideas on enhancing knowledge application in all phases of a programme or project. We regularly organise meetings about impact and we are working on an e-learning module about this. All ZonMw’s clusters/programmes have at least one implementation specialist with whom you can exchange ideas.
Research into ethics and health looks at ethical questions in health care, as well as developing guidelines and policies to tackle existing problems. Our funding programme Ethics and Health stimulates research into ethical issues in health care. But we also have other programmes and projects that cover ethical questions in certain areas.
The government wants everyone to receive good healthcare. To ensure this, many policies for good healthcare have been laid down in laws and regulations. Independent and scientific evaluations of laws are of great social importance in giving advice on the effectiveness, effects and side effects of these laws and regulations in working practice.
