- People with Long COVID currently receive paramedical recovery care, such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, exercise therapy, speech therapy or dietetics, which is covered by the basic health insurance package of the health insurer. However, does this paramedical recovery care in the case of Long COVID work and is it cost-effective? There is no evidence for this. We therefore set up a study…

How do our contractors, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) and the Dutch Research Council (NWO) view the future? How do they see the collaboration developing further? And which steps can we jointly take in the area of lifestyle, working conditions and living environment? - Researchers Hans Knoop and Tanja Kuut from Amsterdam UMC are doing research into the role of behavioural therapy in patients with Long COVID. We use cognitive behavioural therapy to teach people to promote their own recovery.
- At the start of the pandemic, nobody knew anything about COVID-19 and the impact of the virus. There was a lot of attention for people who ended up in hospital, whether or not in intensive care. That is hardly surprising, because they had a high risk of dying. However, the majority of people with a COVID-19 infection simply stayed at home. Little attention was paid to them. We wanted to find out…
- In various blogs, the researchers talk about their experiences with conducting the studies on Long COVID, such as guidelines and care pathways but also risk factors, possible heart damage and Long COVID in children.
- A loss of smell often occurs following a COVID-19 infection. The majority of patients recover from this quickly, often within a month. But in 6 to 8 percent of patients, the symptoms can persist and a disrupted sense of smell may arise.
- During the initial months of COVID-19, little was known about the nature, size, severity and duration of lingering symptoms following a COVID-19 infection. A definition for Long COVID did not yet exist. In our study, we are searching for answers to questions concerning Long COVID. Therefore, at the very least, we must know what Long COVID is. We therefore started the study by formulating a…
- Can we further develop the aftercare trajectories following a hospital admission as a consequence of COVID-19? We are investigating that in the regions Rotterdam, Rijnmond and Delft.
- In March 2022, the guideline for prolonged symptoms following COVID-19 was published. This guideline was rapidly produced by the NHG (Dutch College of General Practitioners), FMS (Federation of Medical Specialists) and the LAN (Lung Alliance Netherlands) when it soon became clear how severe the symptoms of Long COVID could be.
- Long COVID is diagnosed if the symptoms still persist after three months. However, it is not known which symptoms patients might have suffered from prior to COVID-19. Long COVID partly concerns symptoms that occur frequently anyway, such as coughing, fatigue, muscle ache and headache. Did COVID-19 indeed cause these? That is where Lifelines comes into play.
- Emmeline Buddingh, paediatric immunologist at the Willem-Alexander Children’s Hospital at Leiden University Medical Center, and Suzanne Terheggen, paediatric pulmonologist at Amsterdam UMC, are both doing research into the severe and long-term consequences of a COVID-19 infection in children. A small group of these children contract a severe inflammatory disease or develop Long COVID. Emmeline and…
