Alleviating moral distress in nurses by providing tailored care for heart patients

To tailor treatments effectively to an individual's health situation and personal values, the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) has developed the Integrated Decision-making Model (IDM).

Integrated Decision-making Model

This model supports the delivery of customized care by enabling trained nurses to engage with patients about their health status, goals, and preferences regarding potential treatments. These insights are shared with physicians ensuring that treatments are optimally aligned with the patient's needs while fully leveraging the nurses' expertise. UMCG has gained experience with this approach across various patient groups.

Aim

The BOOST project further expands this method, focusing specifically on cardiovascular diseases (CVD), which are increasingly prevalent. By also developing educational materials for vocational (MBO) and higher professional (HBO) nursing programs, future nurses are equipped to provide personalized care. BOOST aims to improve healthcare, education, and policy in a sustainable way.
