BUDDY & CO: Evaluating Self-Help for Gambling with Buddy support and Cognitive Distortions module
Gambling problems are prevalent and the number of people in the Netherlands experiencing gambling harms has risen significantly since online gambling was legalized. The online Zelfhulp Gokken (Self-Help Gambling/SHG) is a free, widely used self-help tool based on motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy recognized by the RIVM.
Objective
This study aims to enhance and evaluate the usage and effectiveness of SHG, as no specific research on it as a standalone intervention has been conducted.
Approach
An enhanced buddy function and a module on gambling misconceptions will be co-created with the target group (SHG users and their significant others). Effectiveness will be evaluated by comparing three SHG versions.
Research partners
This project is a collaboration between researchers from Jellinek (part of Arkin) the Trimbos Institute and the University of Zürich - Swiss Research Institute for Public Health and Addiction (SRIPHA).
(Expected) outcomes
Improved usage and increased satisfaction with the SHG; reduction in gambling-related problems, supporting broader implementation and dissemination while enhancing the support available to individuals with gambling issues.
