Effective forensic treatment of detainees on the ABCSSS islands
Forensic treatment on the ABCSSS islands is scarce due to a lack of resources and knowledge. This project examines the effectiveness of treatment programs for detainees on the ABCSSS islands, namely a reasoning and rehabilitation treatment program on Bonaire and specific treatment programs for addiction, psychosis and aggression on Curacao translated into Papiamentu. If proven effective, these treatment programs can be implemented on the other ABCSSS islands.
Aim
This project aims to translate, use and analyze the effect of different treatment programs in Papiamentu and English for prisoners on the ABCSSS islands.
Approach
The results of the study will be specific and measurable, as participants will be assessed before, during the treatment program and each three months thereafter for one year with assessments of functioning, psychological functioning, antisocial behavior and cognition, hostility, risk factors for recidivism and recidivism.
The study has been formally approved by the medical-ethical committee of the Curaçao Medical Center and by the prisons of Bonaire and Curaçao.
Collaborators
The prisons of Bonaire and Curaçao are involved in the project. The collaboration enables training of local staff in their native language and the development of rehabilitation programs of inmates. Through this, we aim to establish a sustainable process that contributes to the quality of inmate treatment on the ABCSSS islands.
Expected results
The project has the intention to strengthen collaboration for forensic treatment of prisoners and offenders on the ABCSSS islands. Expected knowledge products are treatment programs for prisoners translated in Papiamentu and scientific publications and report. These will be shared with healthcare professionals on the ABCSSS islands and are directly useful for prisoners and offenders. The project team ensures the continuity of the results after the project ends. Meetings and a congress are organized to exchange knowledge. Also, the results will be presented to the prisons and the governments of the ABCSSS islands.
