Fungal Genomics and Antagonistic Community Interactions

FuGACI

Advancements in genome sequencing, determining the DNA code, have enhanced our understanding of microbial pathogens. However, genomics is underutilized for fungal pathogens, despite fungal infections causing a million deaths annually. Challenges arise due to the complexity of fungal genomes, but newer sequencing technology is helping to overcome this.

Aim

This project focuses on Candida, a significant fungal genus responsible for hospital outbreaks, including species like C. albicans, C. auris, and C. parapsilosis. Researchers will use genomics to study Candida transmission in hospitals. They will detect Candida prevalence in the environment and communities through wastewater, and identify gut bacteria that inhibit Candida growth as potential treatments.
