GamblingLess: Early Detection and Support for Young Adults in the Netherlands

Gambling among young adults in the Netherlands has surged, raising concerns about the financial, emotional, social, and mental health risks for vulnerable 16–25-year-olds. Educators, parents, and health professionals often lack tools to detect or address gambling issues in this demographic. Meanwhile, young people, accustomed to digital solutions, often find traditional services unappealing, intimidating, or inaccessible due to long waiting lists. Even when motivated to seek help, they face unsuitable care options, leaving problems unaddressed and worsening over time.

Objective

This project focuses on early detection of gambling problems and appropriate support for young people. With this approach, the researchers aim to make a lasting impact on the detection and treatment of gambling problems among young people in the Netherland.

Approach

In this project, the researchers collaborate with mbo and hbo educators to identify gambling issues among students early, using the 'Helder op School: gokken' materials developed by the Trimbos Institute. Through Implementation Mapping, the researchers explore how to implement this approach effectively and sustainably. Additionally, they aim to translate and enhance the proven effective Australian app 'GamblingLess: In-the-Moment', based on Just-In-Time Adaptive Interventions (JITAIs) and the relapse prevention model, which offers personalized support at vulnerable moments. The Dutch version of the app will be tested through a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to assess its effectiveness and acceptability.

Research partners

This project is a collaboration between employees of a mental healthcare institution (Arkin), an addiction clinic (SolutionS), and researchers from Amsterdam UMC, Deakin University and the Trimbos Institute. The foundation Raad voor de Kansspel Spelers (RvKS) and 2 educational institutions (Fontys Hogeschool en het MediaCollege Amsterdam) are involved with the implementation study .

(Expected) results

The implementation study increases the sustainability and scalability of "Helder op School: Gokken," embedding the programme  into mbo and hbo schools. Findings will inform its expansion and guide similar health initiatives. Dissemination through the program’s existing structure ensures broad adoption. Insights can strengthen components to better prevent risky behaviors like gambling, substance use, and gaming.

Moreover, the development of a user-friendly, effective app fills a critical gap in gambling support in the Netherlands. Promoting the app with young people during the study may also reduce barriers to help-seeking and foster discussions about gambling problems and getting help.
