Gout. Continued.

Gout is the most common inflammatory arthritis and affects around 3% of the Dutch adult population. Furthermore, gout is associated with the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases. It is still unknown what triggers gout attacks, how gout is currently managed in general practice and there is still debate about the role of allopurinol in the treatment of gout in primary care.

Aims

This project has several aims:

  • More knowledge on which factors, like diet and patient characteristics, influence the occurrence and frequency of gout attacks.
  • Gain more insights in patients and GPs opinions and (self-)management of gout and identify barriers and facilitators in the treatment of gout.
  • Assess the influence of the presence of gout, and when used allopurinol, on the occurrence of cardiovascular disease in patients that visit the GP for cardiovascular disease risk management.

General Practitioner care research

We need more knowledge from research into general practice, and we need to disseminate this knowledge among GPs in order to maintain the current high standards of research and care. We therefore support academicization by funding PhD research projects for GPs training to become clinical researchers.
