Implementation of fall prevention in older adults with mild to severe intellectual disabilities
The group of older people with intellectual disabilities is growing. Elderly with an intellectual disability are more likely to fall than older people without intellectual disability. Falls can lead to serious injuries and often have major consequences for their independence and well-being. Therefore, focusing on fall prevention is very important.
Aim
The aim of this project is to increase awareness about fall prevention and to reduce the number of fall incidents. The project results in an adapted guideline, materials, and an implementation plan that other organizations for people with intellectual disabilities can use.
Approach
In this project, we adapt existing guidelines for fall prevention to older adults with mild to severe intellectual disabilities. We will then implement the various steps for fall prevention and evaluate the implementation:
- Identifying people with an increased fall risk.
- Analyzing the existing fall risk factors.
- Applying interventions to reduce the fall risk.
