Implementation of the guideline for pediatric delirium on the pediatric nursing ward
Pediatric delirium (PD) is an acute brain dysfunction in children, triggered by disruption in the body (severe illness, medication, surgery or hospitalization). PD is characterized by agitation, apathy or a combination. It can lead to stressful situations for child and caregivers, prolonged hospitalization, medication use, and long-term health consequences. Early recognition of PD is critical, as it can often be prevented through non-pharmacological interventions
Nursing leadership
Pediatric nurses play a key role in identifying and managing PD. However, due to low screening rates, PD frequently goes unrecognized in pediatric wards. When not detected early, treatment and communication with parents regarding behavioral changes are missed, leading to more severe and persistent symptoms.
Aim
This project aims to implement the national PD guideline for detection and treatment in 5 pediatric wards. Insights and outcomes will serve as a foundation for national implementation and improvement in PD care.
