Implementation of NaSogastrIc tube guiDEline recommendations in hospitals (INSIDE)

Nasogastric tubes (NGT) are used to administer fluids and nutrition. Incorrect placement can lead to severe injury or even death. That is why verification of the position of the tube after placement is crucial.

Aim

The INSIDE-project focuses on procedures for placing, verification of the position and use of NGT, with evaluations at two outpatient clinics and ten nursing wards in the southeast part of the Netherlands. The aim of the project is to ensure safety and efficiency around this type of care.

Approach

In a pre-post study, the project investigates the impact of compliance with the recommendations on effectiveness, patient experiences, and costs, and develops an implementation plan, adapted to the new guideline of 2026. Besides, the updated guidelines strengthens nurses’ autonomy and also because they are actively involved in its implementation and execution. This project provides insight into how compliance with NGT recommendations leads to appropriate care and strengthening of nurses’ autonomy. Insights will be disseminated with infographics and videos.

Appropriate nursing care

To encourage the implementation of appropriate care and the de-implementation of inappropriate care, we are investing in the (de-)implementation of interventions listed on the 'appropriate nursing care' lists. This project is one of them. View the other projects.
