MID-sensitive approaches and networks for the early identification of gambling problems (ESPRIT)
There are concerns about an increase in gambling problems among people with mild intellectual disabilities (MID). Social care professionals and addiction prevention workers are not always equipped to recognize and appropriately address gambling-related issues with people with MID. Collaboration and communication challenges hinder coherent and comprehensive care.
Objective
The aim of the project is to equip professionals with skills and tools to better recognize and support people with (presumed) MID and affected others who are (at risk of) developing gambling problems, gambling-related harms or a gambling disorder.
Approach
Through research and interdisciplinary (combining professional, LVB-experiential and scientific knowledge) communities of practice, we will strengthen the competencies of and collaboration between professional and organisations.
Research partners
The team consists of experts, researchers, experts by experience and practitioners who have access to relevant knowledge, network and practices. They include research institutes IVO and PARC, 3 organisations for addiction prevention: Jellinek, Mondriaan and Brijder, and organisations working with people with MID (MEE Amstel en Zaan and MEE Zuid-Limburg). People living with MID have a central role in the project: as co-researchers, advisors, respondents and participants in the co-development of the approaches.
(Expected) outcomes
The researchers will compile and enrich existing tools and approaches in a MID-sensitive ESPRIT guideline that can be applied in different MID care settings.
