Prevention and Education Against Chronic Episodes of Low Back Pain

Low back pain (LBP) affected 619 million people globally in 2020, with numbers expected to reach 843 million by 2050. LBP costs Dutch society around 3.5 billion euros annually, mainly due high recurrence rates, (70% of patients experience a recurrence within 12 months) and productivity loss.

Treatment

Currently, there is no structured strategy to prevent LBP recurrence after physio-/exercise therapy. An Australian study introduced a structured intervention combining physiotherapist-guided walking programs, health coaching, & educational support, which proved to be (cost)effective.

Aim

Using the ‘Replicating Effective Programs’ (REP) and RE-AIM framework, this project aims to adapt, implement, and evaluate the Australian intervention (SAP_LBP: Structured Approach for the Prevention of LBP) in the Netherlands to reduce recurrent LBP and associated costs. The project will conclude with the delivery of the final SAP_LBP, along with all necessary training and patient materials.
