ReableDEM: Developing a network and knowledge base for person-centred reablement in dementia care

The ReableDEM research group advocates for the inclusion of reablement in dementia care. Reablement is an approach that helps individuals with dementia participate in meaningful daily activities, thus enhancing their quality of life. Despite its potential, the use of reablement in dementia care has been slow.

Results

The group proposes five critical areas for improvement:

  1. shifting the way stakeholders view dementia;
  2. reforming the healthcare system to focus on personalized and integrated care;
  3. training staff to support reablement;
  4. involving family caregivers and;
  5. providing robust evidence through high-quality research.

Implementing these changes could significantly improve outcomes for people with dementia and their caregivers.

Products

The researchers publiced a position paper, a policy letter, a catalogus with reablement tools, interventions and models and they started a ReableDem network.
