Scientific Appraisal of Methods to Prevent and Limit Emergence of AMR - Implementing TDM (SAMPLE-IT)

Careful prescribing of antibiotics is crucial in preventing increases in antimicrobial resistance (AMR). By measuring antibiotic levels with therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) doctors can optimise antimicrobial dosing. There are indications that TDM can prevent the development of AMR. However, data on this subject have not been pooled before. Therefore, the scientific basis for TDM for this purpose remains unclear.

Aim

The aim of this project is to generate an overview of the potential value of TDM in counteracting AMR. In addition, the project aims to gain insight into the barriers and facilitators in applying TDM in general hospital wards. In collaboration with experts and stakeholders, the researchers will use the results to compile a roadmap for the optimal application of antimicrobial TDM in Dutch hospital wards. Not only to provide optimal treatment, but also to proactively counteract development of AMR.

Method

For this project, the researchers will conduct a systematic literature review, a survey study and in-depth interviews.
