Susana: Stop UnnecesSAry Nursing cAre

Future-proof nursing requires a critical look at the current care provided by nurses and carers. Despite initiatives to reduce low-value nursing care (LVNC) in the hospital sector, many LVNC interventions are still being performed.

Aim

The aim of this project is to work with nurses to eliminate frequently performed LVNC, such as bladder irrigation and the use of physical restraints. The project will be executed on 12 nursing wards in three hospitals.

Approach

In this project will compare 2 de-implementation strategies, a standard strategy and a tailored strategy developed in co-creation with nurses, professionals, patients and relatives.

We will measure:

  1. The impact of de-implementation on the number of LVNC interventions performed before and after de-implementing.
  2. Impact of de-implementation strategies.
  3. The costs.
  4. Experiences of those involved.

Based on the results, we want to develop an approach for sustainable de-implementation of LVNC.

Appropriate nursing care

To encourage the implementation of appropriate care and the de-implementation of inappropriate care, we are investing in the (de-)implementation of interventions listed on the 'appropriate nursing care' lists. This project is one of them. View the other projects.
