Two Dutch research groups and industry will jointly develop animal-free innovations via the ZonMw call Create2Solve. Over the next five years, the projects will focus on a 3D model of human brain cells and a better test method for potentially toxic substances. The projects will contribute to limiting the use of laboratory animals in both industry and science. - Afbeelding
The first phase of the programme Create2Solve can start with the three proposals that ZonMw selected to develop animal-free innovations for industry and research. The research groups will develop proof-of-concept projects for two Challenges, formulated by companies in the chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries. The project groups will receive a maximum of 7 months to realise their project… - Afbeelding

On Monday 11 January 2021, the knowledge agenda Microplastics and Health was presented to the State Secretary for Infrastructure and Water Management, Stientje van Veldhoven. This knowledge agenda describes the most important knowledge gaps and calls for more research. ZonMw, together with other research funding bodies, has made an important first step in the right direction for further solution… - Afbeelding
More research is needed into the health risks of microplastics, argue Dutch toxicologists in the renowned scientific journal Science. It is still far from clear whether these new environmental contaminants form a serious risk for human health, and so it is important to determine that quickly. - Afbeelding
This article shows that the impact of nano- and microplastics on human health is still largely unknown. Follow-up research is therefore needed because for decades, people have come into contact with the small plastic particles in their living environment via the air, water and food. These small particles vary in size from nanometres to micrometres. - Afbeelding

ZonMw awards new funding to the Microplastics and Human Health consortium. Under the name 'MOMENTUM 2.0', it will conduct further risk analyses and develop potential pathways to mitigate those risks. - Afbeelding
With new grants totalling € 2,100,000 from ZonMw, 7 new breakthrough projects will start. These projects will do further research into microplastics and nanoplastics within 4 different themes, and will collaborate with the MOMENTUM 2.0 consortium that received follow-up funding earlier this year. - Symptomen bij patiënten met ME/CVS kunnen ontstaan door verschillende factoren. Eén van deze factoren is dat de darmflora niet meer in balans is.

On 3 and 4 June, the new MOMENTUM consortium will officially start with a two-day online kick-off meeting where all 28 partners will come together to get to know each other better and establish the plans for the coming period. - Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is characterised by clonal spread. MRSA clones are unequally distributed across the world and different clones are dominant at different times. AimThe MACOTRA project studied the interaction between MRSA, humans and the environment. The researchers used mathematical models to gain a better understanding of MRSA dynamics.ResultsA main predictor of…
