ALLeviating atopic dermatitis in children and adults by immune-supportive diet

Atopic dermatitis or eczema is a chronic skin condition with inflammation and intense itching. There are indications that diet has an effect on eczema but this has not been sufficiently studied.

Aim

This study investigates if an immune-supportive diet can reduce eczema severity in children and adults. An immune-supportive diet is a healthy, sustainable and anti-inflammatory diet. We aim to study if this diet under the guidance by the dietitian reduces the severity of eczema, improves the skin barrier, improves quality of life and diet quality, and if less medication for eczema and itch are needed. We will also investigate how costly the immune-supportive diet is compared to the usual diet of study participants and if this diet is cost-effective.

Approach

In this study 68 children and adults are assigned by chance to the diet group which will follow the immune-supportive diet for 4 months guided by a dietitian, or to the control group with no dietary advice.
