During the current pandemic, it quickly became clear that the coronavirus and the measures to combat it were having an effect on mental health. ZonMw has therefore funded research to identify which groups experienced extra difficulties, how an appropriate provision of care and support can be set up and what lessons can be learned from the pandemic.- Many studies on the impact of COVID-19 on young people focus on problems like depressive symptoms. This project takes a broader view, examining both negative and positive aspects of mental health. We study how well-being, depressive symptoms, and resilience interact in youth before, during, and after the pandemic. Using data from large youth populations, we map mental health profiles, identify…
- The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on parents. School and childcare closures, balancing work and homeschooling, and reduced social support led to mental health struggles for many. Little is known about the long-term effects on parents' mental health. While many parents may show resilience after the pandemic, others may experience long-term mental health problems, affecting both their…
- The transition from school to work is an important phase for the mental health of young adults. During the pandemic, many young people made this step during a challenging period. This project examines their first years in the labor market and the impact of mental health. We use data from the Health Monitor and Statistics Netherlands (CBS). Representatives of labor market entrants are involved in…
- With this new ZonMw-funded study (number 4), we will continue the systematic data collection we set up earlier. We will focus on parental stress in relation to COVID measures and potential trauma in children, for which we will conduct retrospective focus group interviews with parents and children. Lastly, we will examine the impact of digital (as opposed to face-to-face) therapeutic contacts on…
- One of the most profound measures for the working population during the pandemic was the working from home measure, which advised workers to work from home. While millions of workers altered their work patterns, the impact of this sweeping shift is less clear due to a lack of longitudinal studies. Therefore, insights are needed in the medium-term effects of working from home and the identification…

- Due to lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare was postponed and sectors were closed. People with existing health problems were particularly vulnerable to the consequences. In the long term, this may have lasting effects on their health and labour market position. Mitigating factors, such as a social network or remote care, may have reduced the impact of lockdown measures. Understanding…
- Populations with a migration background and lower educational/occupational groups were more vulnerable to negative changes related to mental health, income, healthy behavior (i.e. diet, tobacco, alcohol use) and access to non-COVID-19 healthcare during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. These populations were also at increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe COVID-19 outcomes…
- Learn how a telenurse makes healthcare more efficient and sustainable and gives people with chronic illnesses more control over their own care.
- Dialysis and kidney transplant patients were the most vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. The effects of COVID-19 measures on the health of these patients will be investigated. The influence of factors as age, gender, family composition, education level and work situation are taken into account. We also look back at how the measures have been experienced by patients. This insight can lead to…
